DRCOG and the City of Federal Heights complete 92nd Avenue Corridor Study
Staff with the Denver Regional Council of Governments and the City of Federal Heights recently completed the 92nd Avenue Corridor Study and presented it to the Federal Heights City Council earlier this year. The study addresses urgent safety and transportation issues on 92nd Avenue between Federal Boulevard and Pecos Street, including speeding, traffic flow, accessibility and pedestrian access. The study is part of DRCOG's Community-Based Transportation Planning Program, which supports member jurisdictions effort to address mobility challenges in historically marginalized communities in the Denver region.
The avenue carries regional traffic, serves multiple mobile home communities and local businesses, and provides critical connections to parks, schools and regional transit. Through events, surveys and outreach, community members identified safety as the top concern, especially speeding near intersections, mobile home communities and residential driveways. Other safety priorities are: narrow and attached sidewalks with no buffer from traffic, unsafe crossings and improved lighting.
Recommendations
The study identified a preferred long-term concept and a phased implementation strategy to reduce crashes and speeding while improving multimodal access.
Following a detailed alternatives analysis, the study team developed and evaluated three corridor concepts that bundled different cross sections, median treatments, crossings, and intersection designs.
The final preferred long-term vision includes:
- Replacing the continuous center turn lane with raised median islands and dedicated turn pockets at key intersections.
- A shared-use path on the north side of the street and widened sidewalks on the south side.
- Pedestrian hybrid beacons at Elm Court and Holiday Boulevard.
- Roundabouts at Camenisch Way and Tejon Street.
