Biking in the cold? Here are some tips to stay safe and warm

A young child rides bicycle with and adult with snow on the ground.

Bike riders who pedal in the winter can keep Jack Frost from nipping at their noses (and fingers, toes and other body parts). With a few smart strategies, riders can stay safe, warm and visible on roads in cold weather.

Be visible

Wear bright or reflective clothing to help others see you. Keep bike lights on to illuminate the path and increase visibility.

Go slow

Allow extra time to reach your destination. Glide gently over snow and ice — avoid sudden braking or sharp turns to prevent slipping.

Keep warm and dry

Dress in thin, breathable layers to avoid overheating. Choose water-resistant outerwear instead of waterproof gear, which can trap sweat and make a rider cold.

Stay hydrated

Even in cold weather, the body generates heat and loses fluids. Drink water or sports drinks and snack on nuts, jerky, dried fruit or energy bars to stay energized.

Check your gear

Handlebar mitts can help protect the cyclist’s hands from wind and cold. Carry a spare tire tube and a working pump in case of a flat.
