April 21, 2018 - 9Health Fair, Drug Takeback Day

Description:
It’s that time of year again: Murf and Jayla welcome back Gary Drews, the CEO of 9Health Fair, who tells us that this year over 100 Colorado communities will host a 9Health Fair, thanks to over 12,000 volunteers from around the state. Fairs begin Saturday, April 21. Gary reminds us that the health fair is always revising their exams based upon new medical research that occurs each year. The lab tests are very low cost, probably about 10 percent of typical fees. 9Health Fair also believes in transparency, so you understand the costs up front. Many health fairs have Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist. Further, no ID’s are required and the results can be mailed anywhere. Go to www.9healthfair.org and find out where and when you can attend. Also, on the website or on the 9 HealthFair Facebook page, you will find a simple short survey that will help 9 Health Fair improve their services and offerings in future years. Also on today's program, Percy Devine III discusses the seriousness of opioids and the drug takeback day that is coming up on April 28. Percy is the Bi-Regional Administrator for Community and represents the Assistant Secretary for Aging and advocating for seniors in 11 states. This past year, Percy served on the Health and Human Services Opioid Committee and explained that opioids are the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. with over 20,000 deaths just last year alone. Percy also stresses that older adults need to better understand drug interactions. More than 80 percent of older adults take at least one pill per day, and 50 percent of this group takes more than five pills daily. Further, the number one way children get access to opioids is in their parents/grandparents medicine cabinets. Please participate in Drug Take Back Day on April 28 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Go to https://takebackday.dea.gov/ and enter your zip code to find the closest location.
