  • What is the TIP and why does it matter?

Transportation projects funded with federal sources are required to be selected through a competitive, regional process. Our shared regional transportation system affects all of us every day, and improving the system can improve our lives. The TIP process selects and funds projects that are important and valuable not only to us as a region, but also to each local government. It’s also how our region implements the fiscally constrained long-range transportation plan by identifying the federally funded transportation projects planned for the Denver region over a four-year period.

How was the draft TIP developed?

For this TIP cycle, DRCOG introduced a new dual model project selection process approved by the Board of Directors. This process had two project selection elements - Regional and Subregional. For both shares, a subregional forum was responsible for submitting projects, programs or studies to the DRCOG Board for consideration. Each DRCOG member government was invited to participate on their county’s subregional forum. CDOT and RTD were invited to participate as non-voting members, as well as other eligible stakeholders.

In the Regional Share, projects were awarded funding that have a regional transportation benefit that implements elements of our shared future vision as a region.  A project review panel with equal representation throughout the region selected and recommended these projects to the DRCOG Board in September.

Within the Subregional Share, funding targets were set for each county for project prioritization and recommendations to the DRCOG Board. Each of the county subregional forums then added criteria specific to their subregional application accounting for local values. Since February 2018, more than 150 forum meetings to determine these recommendations were held throughout the region, covering all eight subregions.  All forum meetings were open to the public.
