Veteran Directed Care

A young man and an older adult man who uses a wheelchair are around a table with the young man explaining how to use a laptop computer.

Veteran Directed Care supports eligible veterans of any age to safely remain in their communities and homes while receiving assistance with daily living activities such as dressing, bathing, preparing and eating meals. As a self-directed program, Veteran Directed Care provides the following opportunities for veterans and their caregivers:
  • Decide what kind of support they need, when they need it, and who provides it.
  • Receive one-on-one case management services and support from a designated case manager.
  • Determine what goods and services best meet their needs.
  • Manage a flexible, individual budget through a self-directed model of care.
  • Hire and supervise caregivers, including family and friends.
  • Purchase items and services to live independently in their communities.

How to apply

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs determines veteran eligibility and establishes the budget for each veteran participating in Veteran Directed Care. Interested veterans should contact their existing VA social worker for more information about the program or connect with a local VA social worker at 303-399-8020 and then press option No. 2.
