Our highly qualified and trained volunteers are the heart of the
Ombudsman program. They regularly visit nursing homes and assisted living residences, talking with residents to help resolve concerns, and educating staff, residents and family alike about resident rights and the ombudsman program itself. The benefits of volunteering are limitless, and include the personal satisfaction gained by helping seniors living in long-term care facilities obtain the highest quality of life possible. It requires patience, compassion and objectivity, and is a great way to use skills acquired through past experience or gain new skills that will benefit you in the future.
Certification as an ombudsman is achieved through our exceptional training program, which includes 20 hours of classroom training as well as on-the-job mentoring. Volunteers are required to complete an additional 15 hours of continuing education throughout the year, and can achieve this through monthly training offered at DRCOG.
To qualify as an ombudsman volunteer and begin the certification training, you must complete a screening process which includes an interview with the ombudsman volunteer coordinator, completion of an application, criminal background investigation and character reference checks.
